Brain basics
Think of it as keys, locks and ripple effects. LSD and psilocin—the active form your body makes from psilocybin—are shaped enough like serotonin to fit some of the same locks in the brain.

A receptor is like a lock on a brain cell. Both substances produce much of their psychedelic effect by turning 5-HT2A locks, especially on cells in the cortex—the outer layer involved in perception and thought.
Those cortical cells change how they fire and influence glutamate, the brain’s main ‘go’ messenger. At larger research doses, familiar brain networks become less synchronized, allowing information to combine in less usual ways.
Animal studies show that psilocybin can grow and reshape tiny connection points between neurons. Scientists call this plasticity. It is a window for change—not proof that every change is beneficial.
Signals in the science
A month-long study found small-to-medium improvements in mood and mental health among psilocybin microdosers compared with non-microdosing participants, across age, gender and the presence of mental health concerns.
In a double-blind human study, a psilocybin microdose produced a measurable reduction in theta-band EEG power. Preclinical research also found strengthened connections between the cortex and thalamus after repeated low doses.
People who microdose psilocybin or LSD most often report improved mood, focus and creativity. Controlled LSD research adds dose-day signals of connectedness, energy, happiness and wellness.
Reading the evidence
Observed improvement is a valuable signal. A randomized placebo-controlled result gives stronger evidence that the substance contributed to it.
A positive dose-day experience is different from a lasting therapeutic change. Both can be meaningful, but they answer different questions.
A measurable brain change is not automatically a therapeutic benefit. The human psilocybin EEG study found altered rhythms without improved cognition or wellbeing.
These studies investigated specific research samples and settings. They do not establish microdosing as a treatment for a medical condition.
